Oclaro Introduces New Focus™ 1064nm High Power Laser for Raman Spectroscopy Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 17, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Oclaro, Inc. (Nasdaq: OCLR), the newly named optics and photonics company following the merger of Bookham and Avanex, has introduced a 1064nm capability to its portfolio of New Focus™ high power SWL-7500 single wavelength lasers for Raman spectroscopy.

The 1064nm variant of the high power laser (SWL-7521) is designed to meet demand from customers undertaking Raman spectroscopy work, where longer wavelengths can help reduce the fluorescence background of the spectra. The high power laser portfolio from New Focus offers narrow linewidth and long coherence length, which are crucial for industrial spectroscopic applications such as quality control, chemical analysis, and security.

The high power laser is enabled by the GaAs (gallium arsenide) chips manufactured at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Zurich. The chip design also leverages the same technology as the market-leading Oclaro terrestrial and submarine telecom amplifier and pump portfolios, including the 750mW ultra high power pump and the OceanBright™ submarine pump.

The SWL-7500 series lasers will be on show at the Oclaro booth (#C1.341) at LASER World of Photonics and available through the New Focus Catalog and website - www.newfocus.com - or by contacting sales@newfocus.com.

Oclaro was formerly Bookham, Inc. prior to its merger with Avanex Corporation last April. The company also recently announced entering into a definitive agreement with Newport Corporation which, if the transaction closes, will, among other things, provide Oclaro with a portion of the Newport Spectra Physics high power laser diode business, and provide Newport with the existing New Focus business. Oclaro will continue to leverage its cutting edge, high reliability laser diode manufacturing facilities to service industrial, defense and medical markets with high power lasers and VCSELs.
