Development Engineer (#ANY-03-08)

Position Summary:

A development engineer is integral to the design and reliability of new products for Avanex's Advanced Modules and Subsystems Business Unit. A qualified candidate must have background in optics and/or physics with capability to design test systems for our new products.

Responsibilities:

  • Experienced technologist to work with designers, marketing, customers, and project leaders to implement the design, development, and testing of new products. Role may include any or all design aspects - optical, mechanical, electrical designs, and design of manufacturing & test processes.
  • Performs tests and trouble-shooting of prototypes and test equipment. Implements modifications, fabrication, and assembly of prototypes as required.
  • Analyzing and responding to customer and marketing requirements. Converting customer/marketing requirements into detailed engineering specifications and robust, cost effective designs that will meet those specifications.
  • Reliability for products: Define test plans to meet industry standard and customer-specific requirements. Set up and run reliability tests and analyze results. Conduct failure analysis, identify root cause, determine and implement corrective actions to resolve reliability issues.
  • Transfer completed designs to mass production at contract manufacturer. Production support during production startup as required.
  • Writing and editing test reports, test specifications, and assembly specifications.
Qualifications:
  • Education: BS Engineering or equivalent experience is required. Formal education in optics or physics is desired.
  • Professional Experience: 5+ years in optical telecommunications is required.
  • Familiarity with test requirements and methodologies is required, and hands-on experience with reliability test equipment is desired, as is early-stage design project experience. Direct experience with chromatic dispersion compensation, fiber bragg gratings, etalons, and other advanced dispersion management technologies is desired.
  • Supervision: Responsible for determining methods and procedures for new assignments (normally receives little day to day instruction).
  • Knowledge: Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • " Job Complexity: Works on assignments that are semi-routine to moderately difficult, recognizing the need for deviation from accepted practice, and has the ability to use judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations
  • Experience working in global project team is required, experience working with Asian cultures (as customer, supplier, and/or colleagues)is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel globally
