Joel A. Smith III
Joel A. Smith III is Dean of the Moore
School of Business at the University
of South Carolina – Columbia.
He joined USC in October of 2000 after
his retirement from Bank of America
in August.
Smith joined Bank of America in 1971
and during his tenure advanced from
credit analyst to President of Bank
of America East with responsibilities
for Commercial, Small Business, Premier
and Consumer Banking divisions in
seven states and the District of Columbia,
representing more than $90 billion
in assets under management.
A native of Columbia, S.C., he graduated
from the University of the South in
Sewanee, Tenn., with a BA in political
science and economics, from the National
Commercial Lending School at the University
of Oklahoma and from the School of
Banking of the South at Louisiana
State University. Smith served in
the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971 and
in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1971
to 1987, when he retired as commander.
Smith serves on the boards of the S.C.
Business Center for Excellence in
Education and S.C. ETV Endowment.
He is a member of the Board of Regents
for the University of the South. He
is a member of the Board of Spoleto
Festival USA and co-chairs the 25th
Anniversary Campaign. Additionally
he serves on the Board of Directors
for NetBank, chairing the Compensation
Committee, and is an organizer, Director
and chair of the Audit Committee for
Carolina National Bank & Trust.
In January 2003, Smith was awarded
the Order of the Palmetto, the highest
civilian award given by the governor
of South Carolina. In May 2001, Smith
was inducted into the South Carolina
Business Hall of Fame and for 2000,
named Humanitarian of the Year by
the United Way. In 1997 he was named
the S.C. Economic Development Volunteer
of the Year by the SCEDA. He received
the “Tree of Life” award
from the National Jewish Fund and
has been awarded honorary degrees
from S.C. State University, Fayetteville
State University and the University
of South Carolina, Aiken. In 1994,
he received the Businessman of the
Year award from the S.C. Chamber of
Commerce.
